Kylian Mbappe stands alone! PSG winners & losers as French forward breaks coveted record with late goal

Kylian Mbappe scored his 201st PSG goal to become their all-time top goalscorer in a back-and-forth win over mid-table Nantes on Saturday

Mbappe has probably never celebrated a routine finish with such vigour, the Paris Saint-Germain winger screaming in delight after smashing his record-breaking shot home to put his team up by two goals two minutes into stoppage time.

It was a strike of great personal significance for the 24-year-old, one that made him PSG’s all-time top goalscorer in all competitions as he further etched his name into the Ligue 1 history books.

Not long after, PSG honoured him with fireworks and a trophy ceremony on the field – all the decadence one would expect from the Parc des Princes.

His goal was rather handy for Saturday’s purposes, too, as it sealed a 4-2 victory that at times looked like it might escape PSG.

Lionel Messi got the Parisians going with a neat finish from close range for a 1-0 lead. Their second came a few minutes later, as Jaouen Hadjam bundled the ball into his own net.

But they never looked secure in their advantage. Ludovic Blas got the first for Nantes, beating Gianluigi Donnarumma at his near post off a sliced cross. The equaliser from Nantes followed shortly after, Ignatius Ganago deflecting the ball in from a corner.

PSG reclaimed the lead in the second half through a Danilo Pereira header. Mbappe added a second in stoppage time, an emphatic finish from close range to break the PSG all-time goalscoring record and secure three important

• Kylian Mbappe

There were equal parts joy and relief in Mbappe’s face.

The winger had tried and toiled to grab a goal, one that would make his PSG’s all-time leading goalscorer. And for 91 minutes, it eluded him. Goalkeeper Alban Lefont judged his every move, anticipated every shot.

But in the 92nd, Mbappe had his moment. He spun off a Nantes defender and thumped the ball in from close range for goal number 201.

PSG’s pre-prepared graphic flashed on the scoreboard, the stadium erupted in noise. It’s the kind of moment that Mbappe came to PSG for, the Paris native soaking in the spotlight while setting another individual record.

He’s still only 24, an age that represents the beginning of many successful first-team careers for mere mortals. He could retire now and be an all-time French great.

But, fortunately for his fans, he doesn’t look like he’ll be stopping the flow of goals anytime soon.

• Gianluigi Donnarumma

For all of his shot-stopping quality, Donnarumma is liable for an occasional mistake.

And he made a particularly poor one on Saturday. Donnarumma was beaten far too easily at his near post for Nantes’ first goal, failing to cover the front peg as Blas mishit a cross into the net. The goalie nearly fumbled in a second a few minutes later, spilling a shot from distance before PSG hacked the ball away.

Donnarumma was significantly more composed after the break, making a couple of tidy saves that PSG cruised to a relatively comfortable win. Still, he had a significant hand in destabilizing PSG’s lead.

And after Keylor Navas departed for Nottingham Forest, Galtier doesn’t have the luxury of another top-class option in the reserves, just in case…

• Lionel Messi

It’s all a bit easy for the Argentine at the moment.

After a rough January, the World Cup winner has come alive. He had a hand in all three PSG goals against Marseille last week, and got himself on the scoresheet here, too. His opener wasn’t the prettiest of strikes: Messi simply slipped into the box and turned in a deflected cross. But it was an important one, getting a slightly languid PSG team going.

There was more to this Messi performance, the usual exploitation of impossible angles and nonexistent spaces. He blasted one narrowly over after PSG conceded. He had a free kick saved at full stretch. And his defence-splitting pass almost gave PSG a penalty.

With Neymar out due to an ankle injury, Messi will need to continue to star for the Parisians.

PSG’s injury list

Galtier must wonder what he has to do to keep his players fit. it’s been a miserable season of injuries for PSG. And after Neymar and Presnel Kimpembe were both lost to long-term issues, the manager must have thought it couldn’t get any worse.

But he would be wrong in that assumption. Nordi Mukiele and Marquinhos were both removed with knocks in the second half, leaving PSG without a fit senior right-back and with only one experienced centre-back.

The two might not be out for long spells, but PSG face Bayern Munich in just four days in a crucial Champions League knockout tie. It’s a game they need to be as ready as possible for. And they might now have to make do without two more presumptive starters.

Danilo Pereira

Very quietly, Pereira has been one of PSG’s best players since the World Cup. The defensive midfielder is strong in a tackle, decisive on the ball, and a composed presence in a too-often chaotic side.

It helps, too, that the Portuguese is willing to play in a number of different positions. He functioned as a centre-back on Saturday and was arguably the best of PSG’s three central defenders. For an auxiliary player, he looks incredibly comfortable at an unfamiliar position.

Pereira also snagged a timely goal, meeting Mbappe’s cross with a neat header to give PSG the lead for good after an hour. He will likely have to continue to operate in central defence, with Presnel Kimpembe done for the season. On Saturday’s evidence, that might not be a bad thing at all.

Jaouen Hadjam

The Nantes wing-back had a day to forget. First, he failed to track Messi on PSG’s opener. Then, he got his legs tangled and turned the ball into his own net to hand PSG a 2-0 lead. He was fortunate that his team scored two to equalise – rendering his two errors mostly irrelevant.

He’s not the only Nantes player who could’ve perhaps kept things more solid at the back, but his errors accounted for two goals.

Lionel Messi & Kylian Mbappe better as a duo! Winners & Losers as Ligue 1 leaders see off Marseille in impressive style without Neymar

Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi were among the goals as Paris Saint-Germain turned in a counter-attacking clinic to beat Marseille.

PSG spent most of Sunday proving that it helps to have two of the best players in the world. The Parisians weren’t always good, but they relied on their stars, who took over in the big moments to inspire a 3-0 victory that takes them eight points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 standings.

After being pinned back for the first 20 minutes, PSG exploded. Mbappe was first, darting behind the Marseille backline, latching on to Messi’s pass, and finding the bottom corner.

Messi followed shortly after, this time turning home a cross from Mbappe to give the Ligue 1 leaders a 2-0 lead. The 35-year-old’s simple finish was his 700th goal at club level, and he is now just one goal away from matching Cristiano Ronaldo’s all-time European record.

The duo hit on the break again shortly after half time. Messi provided the pass, with a lovely curled chip into the path of Mbappe. The forward buried it with aplomb, guiding the ball into the far corner with an outside-of-the-foot volley for his 200th goal in a PSG shirt – level with Edinson Cavani as the club’s all-time record scorer.

Marseille had some chances as the half wore on, but Gianluigi Donnarumma made a series of neat saves, while PSG’s backline produced a handful of important clearances.

For all of the criticism levelled at PSG and head coach Christophe Galtier, the Ligue 1 leaders still have Mbappe and Messi. That, as it turns out, is a good thing.

: Lionel Messi

This was a modern Messi classic. He doesn’t run much anymore, nor does he affect play as he did in his Barcelona heyday. But he can still produce game-defining moments.

And that was the case against Marseille, as the forward was deadly when required. He assisted PSG’s first, threading a perfectly-weighted pass into the stride of Mbappe. He scored the second shortly after, buzzing into the penalty area before finishing from inside the six-yard box for his 700th club career goal.

And then, the third. Messi curved a ball over the back four, which Mbappe turned in with an outside-of-the-foot volley to establish an unassailable lead.

It was one of those performances where Messi makes everything look so easy. He seldom sprinted; he never really seemed to try. Still, he lifted his team to a win nonetheless.

: Neymar jr

Was this the game that suggested that Neymar is surplus to requirements?

PSG were far more dangerous in the absence of the Brazilian attacker, who has been sidelined due to ankle ligament damage, and are now arguably better overall without him. Neymar, brilliant as he is, slows the game down. He constricts the spaces, allows opponents to recover, and can be detrimental to the flow of an attack. For all of the brilliant, eye-catching moments, he is something of an awkward fit in this side.

And Sunday was perfect proof. Mbappe and Messi were devastating on the break and worked well in tandem with a more aggressive midfield trio backing them up. There are certainly benefits to having Neymar in the side, especially when PSG play against teams that will sit back a bit more. But in these open contests, the Brazilian is no longer a necessity.

: Kylian Mbappe

Turns out the other guy isn’t too bad at football either.

Mbappe was radically different to Messi on Sunday. He was all energy, a blur of legs and tricks. And it was just too much for Marseille. The winger started deep, but eventually pushed higher up the pitch, tasked with running in behind a worryingly open Marseille back line.

And he was devastating once he got into the right positions. Mbappe scored the opener with a dash into space and finish. He grabbed the third with a curved run and volley. He added an assist for good measure, nutmegging a defender with a probing cross that Messi turned in from short range.

There could have been one or two more, had Pau Lopez not made two big stops. Still, Mbappe will take the brace. He is now PSG’s joint all-time leading goalscorer with 200 goals. If he sticks around, there will be a lot more to come.

: The title race

Well, that was fun while it (maybe) lasted.

There has been a new competitor to PSG’s title hopes every week. First, it was Lorient. Then it was Lens’ turn. And going into Sunday, Marseille were the newly anointed challengers. And it makes sense. Marseille are direct, intense and dynamic. They have pace on the break and are solid enough defensively to make some noise atop the table.

But their hopes crumbled over 90 commanding Parisian minutes. PSG battered their league rivals without having to dominate play, simply relying on their two-star men to brush aside the second-placed team.

Marseille weren’t at their best on the day, and committed a series of mistakes that led to two of PSG’s goals. But near-perfection is required to compete with the reigning champs. Marseille, for all of their strengths, can’t reach the same level every single week.

It’s not over yet, but it’s difficult to see which team can push PSG next.

: Christophe Galtier

This wasn’t a managerial masterclass from Galtier. But he kept it simple, and that worked. Galtier relied on his preferred 3-5-2 system, gave his front two freedom to operate, and configured his midfield triangle to nullify Marseille’s creativity.

Alexis Sanchez, so devastating for Marseille at his best, was kept mostly quiet. Matteo Guendouzi had little space to make any signature driving runs. And Cengiz Under, usually so quick and tricky, had very few clear opportunities.

It all amounted to a solid performance, with Messi and Mbappe carrying the attacking weight, and the rest of the team working hard enough around them to get a crucial three points.

The former Lille boss might not be the answer going forward, but he has enough talent in his side to keep winning — as long as he doesn’t fiddle around too
: Presnel Kimpembe

The centre-back’s rotten luck continues. Presnel Kimpembe went down injured while tracking back early in the game, and was visibly upset while being stretchered off. It was another tough blow in an unfortunate season for the France international, who missed the World Cup with a knock, and is now facing another lengthy spell out.

Galtier confirmed after the match that Kimpembe will miss the rest of the season after tearing his achilles.

PSG should stay afloat in his absence, especially with Sergio Ramos and Marquinhos settling into form. But Kimpembe is a top talent, and will undoubtedly be a big miss, not least for the extra experience he can offer.

Lionel Messi hits 700! PSG star joins Cristiano Ronaldo in exclusive goals club after strike vs Marseille

Brown Tsuma

Lionel Messi scored the 700th goal of his club career on Sunday when he found the net during Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 clash against Marseille.

• Messi scored against Marseille

• Has now hit 700 goals in club career

• Joined Ronaldo in passing milestone

What Went Down? Just four minutes after he set up Kylian Mbappe for the opening goal of the game, the Argentina international doubled PSG’s lead with a goal of his own, tapping home a low pass from the Frenchman at the back post.

: The World Cup winner has now scored 28 times for PSG to add to his 672 for Barcelona, taking his tally up to 700. That puts him alongside Cristiano Ronaldo to reach the milestone, with the Portuguese star having surpassed it earlier this season during his second spell at Manchester United.

Messi and Ronaldo are the only two men to reach the 700 goal mark at club level in the European game. Ronaldo left United in November with 701 to his name before joining Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, which means Messi now just needs two more goals to hold the outright record.

After the clash against Marseille, the French champions will meet Nantes in Ligue 1 on March 4.

Lionel Messi to Inter Miami rumors heat up as Barcelona link goes cold
A renewal with PSG seems less certain than before

Reports continue to cast doubt on Lionel Messi’s renewal with Paris Saint-Germain. The Argentine star is the subject of intense speculation after his FIFA World Cup triumph.

The option to join Inter Miami in the MLS is gaining strength according to the latest gossip. The club, partly owned by David Beckham, has been working to sign Messi since their inception. And the #10 himself has not hid his affection for the city of Miami or the idea of playing in the USA.

Another possibility would be joining FC Barcelona, but that link has gotten colder. His father and agent, Jorge Messi, publicly stated that it would be unlikely. His brother, Rodrigo Messi, outright said Messi would not return so long as Joan Laporta is club president.

There are another two options – a return to Newell’s Old Boys, his boyhood club in Argentina is one. That he wants to play his last season there is an open secret, but when that would be is harder to say.

Finally, there are rumors of an offer from Saudi Arabia. Considering the insane amount of money paid to Cristiano Ronaldo to make the switch to the Saudi League, there is a chance for Messi to earn a similarly huge payday.

Another consideration is his desire to play in the next Copa América for his beloved Argentina. Will he be able to stay in elite rhythm if he drops outside of Europe’s top leagues? That’s a question we are waiting to see come the summer.
