THE GOAT OF FOOTBALL

Incomparable Messi reminds Salah who is master of left-footed arts

There was a moment at the end of this game – like so many other Lionel Messi moments – that you felt like pulling out of the air, taking home and keeping on a constant loop in the front of your brain. Like all the best Messi bits it was a moment of jaw-dropping skill. It was also very funny.

In the last seconds of stoppage time, with Barcelona already 3-0 up, Ousmane Dembélé led a breakaway from a Liverpool corner. Inside him Messi chugged forward, legs pounding the grass, battery draining, not so much eating up the ground as grimly chugging it down.

Dembélé gave him the ball. Messi stopped and played a pass of genuine absurdity, a waggle of the hips throwing every covering grey shirt towards the far corner flag, like sailors tossed by a wave, as he slipped the ball back to Dembélé in front of goal. It was the old Messi paradox: how is it possible for one man to spot something nobody else among the 90,000 other pairs of watching eyes can see, to pull these angles out of the air, these planes of movement?

Brilliantly Dembélé even managed to miss, shooting weakly at Alisson. Messi flopped face first on the grass as the whistle blew for full-time. By that stage the best player in this world or any other had written his name all over another Champions League semi-final. Throughout the second half Messi had come at Liverpool in waves, producing those hypnotic little turns where suddenly the day stops and only one man seems to be more moving. But that wasnt the whole story Liverpool did run Barcelona  close in the opening hours of the game led by their talisman Moh Salah.

Messi is described as the best of all times and even the special one Jose Mourinho said that Messi is the SPECIAL ONE.

Shambolic results for Arsenal

Arsenal fans demand Unai Emery sells ONE player after Wolves horror show – ‘Useless

ARSENAL fans have demanded Unai Emery sells Mesut Ozil this summer after the Gunners’ horror show at Wolves.

The Gunners went 3-0 down at Wolves on Wednesday evening.

One supporter wrote on Twitter: “Sell Ozil immediately.”

Another added: “Ozil is f***ing s*** please sell him.”

Arsenal news: Fans have demanded Unai Emery sells Mesut Ozil

“Ozil is awful when will Arsenal sell that liability? Trash player,” added a fellow fan.

Another Gunners fan wrote on Twitter: “Shambolic! Sell Aubameyang, Lacazette, Ozil. Let’s build a new team.”

“Mustafi is f***ing useless mkhitaryan is shocking elneny is league 1 Xhaka is s*** jenkinson is a decorator monreal finished sell the f***ing lot and Chuck ozil In there aswell,” another fan fumed.

Ozil and Emery haven’t seen eye to eye this season, with the Arsenal boss benching the German as he wasn’t up to the physicality of the Premier League.

The Gunners ace is under contract until 2021 and his wages could be an issue in selling the playmaker.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Wolves, Gunners ace Bernd Leno claimed Emery’s men will finish in the top four this season

Arsenal went 3-0 down at Wolves

.[It will be] Manchester City first, because Liverpool also have the Champions League, so maybe they will lose some power and energy from that,” he told Sky Sports.

“I believe they have a realistic chance against Barcelona, it’s 50-50, but City only have the FA Cup final and the Premier League.

“I think at the end it will then be us and Tottenham.

“I believe in our quality and we have everything in our own hands.

“I don’t mind about the other teams though, if we are in the top four everything is OK for me!”

FOOTBALL HISTORY MADE AGAIN

Shane Long makes history with fastest ever Premier League goal

In Shane Long’s case on Tuesday, he needed just 7.69 seconds, as he charged down a clearance from Watford’s Craig Cathcart before giving Southampton a record-breaking lead at Vicarage Road in their English Premier League match.
For Long, by no means a prolific goalscorer — this was only his ninth goal in his last 84 top flight appearances — it meant an unlikely place in the history books.
The Irishman’s early strike saw him usurp former Tottenham captain Ledley King as the scorer of the Premier League’s fastest ever goal.
King had scored 9.82 seconds into a game against Bradford City the 2000/01 season. Long is the second Southampton player to score inside the opening 15 seconds of a Premier League game; James Beattie took only 13.52 seconds to give the Saints the lead away at Chelsea in the 2004/05 season.
Long's goal sent him into the record books as the scorer of the Premier League's fastest ever goal.

Record breakers

Former Turkey forward Hakan Sukur holds the record for the fastest goal in a World Cup match, a milestone he achieved by netting an opening goal 11 seconds into the third-place playoff against South Korea in 2002.
Meanwhile, Belgium striker Christian Benteke holds the record for the fastest goal scored in a World Cup qualification game; he found the back of Gibraltar’s net just 8.1 seconds into their clash in 2016. Famously, San Marino took the lead against England in a qualifier after 8.3 seconds in 1993, thanks to a goal from Davide Gualtieri.
Russia’s Dmitri Kirichenko hold the equivalent record in the history of the European Championship; he scored 67 seconds into a game at the 2004 tournament against Greece, who would go on to win the competition unexpectedly.
Southampton could not hold on for what would have been a crucial victory. Watford, who will face Manchester City in the FA Cup final, equalized in the final minute through Andre Gray (right).
Podolski, who scored against Ecuador after just six seconds in 2013.
Long’s goal, however, could not quite guarantee Premier League safety for a Southampton side now managed by Ralph Hasenhuttl. While Long may have scored in the first minute of the game, Watford equalized in the last through Andre Gray.
The 1-1 draw moves Watford back ahead of Everton into seventh place, while Southampton sit 16th — six points ahead of Cardiff City, the current occupier of the final relegation position.

Nemanja Matic says he was ‘biggest problem’ in Manchester United’s defeat at Everton

Nemanja Matic admitted he was not at his best during Manchester United's heavy defeat to Everton

Nemanja Matic says he was Manchester United’s “biggest problem” during their 4-0 defeat at Everton on Super Sunday.

The humbling at Goodison Park consigned United to their sixth defeat in eight matches, prompting manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to apologise to the club’s supporters at full-time.

Solskjaer also warned his under-performing players that some of them could be sold in the summer as he looks to reshape the United squad.

When asked about the performance against Everton, midfielder Matic told Danish broadcasters TV2: “Many things didn’t work for us today. First of all, our approach.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer apologised to the United's travelling support after full-time

I think that the most experienced guys, in this case me, didn’t play well today. So I don’t think we need to blame the young guys today. I was the biggest problem.

“In these kinds of games, you have to win the battle in the middle, then the team can play better football. We didn’t do that.”

United remain in the hunt for a Champions League place despite the defeat and sit two points behind fourth-placed Arsenal ahead of Wednesday night’s derby match against Manchester City at Old Trafford,Matic says the United squad have already spoken about how they can bounce back against their neighbours, who will return to the top of the Premier League with a victory.

Top four race in EPL

Schoolboy’ Mustafi slammed by Keown as Arsenal defender’s shambolic showing dents top-four bid

The Germany international endured another tough afternoon against Crystal Palace on Sunday, with more questions being asked of his value to the cause

Shkodran Mustafi has been slammed by former Arsenal defender Martin Keown for his latest “schoolboy” showing which has dented the Gunners’ bid for a top-four finish.

The World Cup winner has faced plenty of criticism over his performances this season.

More questions of his value to the cause are being asked on the back of a 3-2 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Mustafi is considered to have been at fault for all three of the Eagles’ goals, with the 27-year-old struggling with the basics expected from a player of his standing.

Keown told Match of the Day 2 when assessing the German’s latest showing at Emirates Stadium, starting with Christian Benteke’s opener: “This is just poor defending, Mustafi.

“When the ball goes over your head you drop off as quick as you can. He’s not even aware of Benteke.

“If the ball is delivered into the box, it’s a tap in. Mustafi has completely switched off.

“He sees him and puts the burners on but Benteke just steps inside of him. It’s school boy defending.”

When everyone else attacks the ball, do your job. Ball comes into the box. Flicks it on. Mustafi loses his man and McArthur it’s an easy header.”

Arsenal remain fourth in the Premier League despite coming unstuck against Palace, but they are level on points with London rivals Chelsea and only two clear of Manchester United.

As a result, the battle for Champions League qualification appears set to go down to the wire.

Unai Emery👔 Rejects Ozil Rift Reports❌*

Arsenal coach Unai Emery is adamant that reports claiming he Mesut Ozil do not get on are false and saluted the German’s focus following international retirement.

Prior to the international break, stories began to circulate suggesting Ozil and his coach had fallen out after the midfielder was left out of the squad for Arsenal’s 3-1 win over West Ham

Ozil returned to Arsenal’s starting XI in their next outing, a thrilling 3-2 triumph at Cardiff City, but reports about a supposed tense relationship were not put to bed.

So, at his news conference ahead of Saturday’s trip to Newcastle United, Emery looked to end all the speculation, insisting his relationship with Ozil is fine.

“[We get on] very well,” said the Spaniard.

“Here [at a media day] for me it isn’t for speaking about what people are telling us. I have a very good relationship with Mesut and professionally I push him for improvements to give us the best in his qualities and performances.

“Also, I read this week in the newspapers in the match against Manchester City I say to the [groundsman]: ‘don’t put water on the pitch’ – it’s not true.”

Sung Hyun Park Claims 2nd Major in Women’s P.G.A. Playoff

KILDEER, Ill. — Sung Hyun Park raised her arms and placed her hands on her head before hugging her caddie and wiping away tears. She simply could not contain her emotions after winning her second major championship — and doing it in such dramatic fashion.

Park beat So Yeon Ryu on the second hole of a playoff on Sunday in the Women’s P.G.A. Championship.

After a brief rain delay on the par-4 16th hole at Kemper Lakes, Ryu’s birdie try rolled past, and Park finished off her South Korean compatriot with a 10-footer.

“Actually, this is my first time feeling this kind of emotion, being this emotional,” Ryu said through an interpreter. “And I was really happy, like, I couldn’t help that.”

The Japanese teenager Nasa Hataoka, who shot an eight-under-par 64 and posted at 10 under, dropped out of the playoff with a par on the par-4 18th. Ryu made a 20-footer for birdie, and Park followed from 10 feet

Park, 24, closed with a three-under 69. Ryu had a 73. She took a two-stroke lead on the 16th but hit into the water on the par-3 17th on her way to a double bogey.

“Wind just took it really hard to the left, and then it’s in the water hazard,” she said. “But once again, I did my best. If I look back, nothing I can do any better than that. I just did 100 percent effort every shot, every putt, and still, you know, I like looking at the positive side. This is my best finish for this tournament, so hopefully it’s going to keep improving. And one day I want to lift that trophy.”

But this time, it was Park’s turn. She made a brilliant par save on 16 after she dug out from the water’s edge. In the end, she added another major to go with the 2017 United States Women’s Open and took home the $547,500 prize.

Nine strokes behind Ryu entering the day, Hataoka nearly pulled off one of the biggest comebacks in L.P.G.A. Tour history. She was already off the course when Ryu made a 30-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole, going two strokes up at 12 under. But Ryu’s tee shot on No. 17 went into water off the green, setting up the three-way tie.

Park just missed a birdie on that hole when her 20-footer hit the edge of the cup. And she had a chance to win it on 18, only to watch her 18-foot birdie attempt role just past the edge.

Jessica Korda (68) and Angel Yin (71) tied for fourth at seven under, with Charley Hull (67) at six under. Brooke Henderson (74) — second through three rounds — was five under.

After rain earlier in the week, the final three days were marked by temperatures in the 90s. And with storms forecast for late Sunday afternoon, organizers adjusted the start times and had groups of three tee off on the first and 10th holes.

Ryu started on No. 1 with Park and Henderson and ran into trouble after rallying on the closing holes and grabbing a three-stroke lead in the third round. One short putt rimmed out, and another deflected out of the back of the cup in a double bogey on No. 2.

Park, who had begun the day four shots behind, went to nine under with back-to-back birdies, chipping in on the par-3 third and making a short putt on No. 4.

Hataoka was coming off her first tour victory at the NW Arkansas Championship last week and nearly pulled this one out even after beginning the day all but out of contention.

She eagled the par-5 seventh hole and bounced back from a bogey on the par-4 No. 10 with another eagle on the par-5 11th. She then birdied the 12th, 15th and 16th holes on the way to her sixth top-10 finish in her past seven L.P.G.A. starts.

She did not think she would wind up back on the course when she walked off after the 18th hole. But as Park and Ryu played their final holes, she went out to practice, thinking she might be in a playoff against two past major champions.

“Yeah, I did feel nerves going in,” Hataoka said through an interpreter. “But on the other hand, I haven’t won a major yet, so I felt like I had nothing to lose.”
